Easy DIY Wire Wrapped Crystal Ladder Boho Necklace

5136 Views

A step-by-step tutorial that is simple to make, using basic wire wrapping techniques. Go grab some of your favorite crystals and gems to make this simple wire wrapped crystal ladder necklace!

Materials:

• Crystal stones or sticks
Wire cutters
• Other raw gems ( pictured here are raw pyrite nuggets)
Round nose pliers
Flat nose pliers
• Wire – color of your choice (this instance I am using 26g gold tone wire)
• Jump rings
• Lobster clasp
• Chain (of desired length)

Steps:

First thing you want to do is lay out your crystals on the table, play around with the order that you want to see your gems in. Pick colors that go well together or will make it easy to match to an outfit. You can choose as many or as little layers of crystals as you would like. Once you have your order set, you are now ready to wire wrap them.

Double Loop Vs Single Loop

Below is a close up of the loop pattern you want to create. Depending on how many crystals you are working with, you are going to wire wrap all of them with two loops, one on each end except for the last bottom bead that will be a single loop.

Alternative: You can always opt to put a charm, or tassel at the very bottom of your ladder instead of a bead.

Now let’s create your crystal ladder!

1. Decide which stone you will start with first, I usually work from top down but you can start with the bottom stone if you prefer.
Cut a piece of wire about 12″ long

2. Fold the wire in half and make a simple loop with your round nose pliers.

3. Take your first stone, place the wire around the top, bring the two ends of the wire together and pinch them to the bottom center of the stone. Twist the wire a couple of times to secure in place. This is your first “double loop” crystal

Steps 1 – 3

4. Once you have a tight twist, finish off with another wire loop on the opposite end. If you have extra wire you can either snip it off or in this case I used the extra wire to wrap around the base of the loop to tighten the wire against the stone (see the images below for example)

5. Now that you have the first stone wire wrapped, cut another 12″ piece of wire and create an OPEN loop.

6. Hook the open loop to your first stone. Once hooked – follow steps 2-6 and repeat with the rest of your stones

Final Steps

You now have your wire wrapped crystal ladder created! It’s time to add it to your chain with a jump ring. If you are making your own necklace (as I did), slide the crystal pendant with jump ring onto the chain, then add your lobster clasp and closing jump rings to each end to finish off the necklace.

Tips:

  1. I suggest taking some glue, like E6000, and adding a little spot of glue to any areas of wire that might be really loose. Let it sit and dry over night before wearing.  You don’t have to do this if you don’t want to but if your wraps are not tight enough the stone could fall out later on.
  2. To make wire wrapping easier and more secure, I suggest selecting stones that are rough or not smooth around the edges. This gives the wire something to grasp onto.
  3. Looking for supplies – I buy most of my stuff at local bead shops but if you are looking for these online here are some keywords to search. Search words in supplies that can help you are:
Raw Crystal nuggets, Crystal Wand, Crystal Quartz Beads
